Hearing a lot of buzz lately about ONIX 3.0 and wondering what all the fuss is about? While ONIX 2.1 was sunset by global ONIX standards organization EDItEUR on December 31, 2014 in favour of ONIX 3.0, many North American data recipients continue to support 2.1 at the expense of 3.0, including Amazon.
In November 2019, Amazon confirmed that by December 2020 they will no longer accept ONIX 2.1, for all Amazon domains globally, and expect to receive only ONIX 3.0 for print book products. Though this only concerns print products at present, digital products (ebooks and audiobooks) will follow shortly thereafter.
So what’s the chatter about? Many data providers are now on a rushed timeline to ensure they have a 3.0 feed ready to distribute to Amazon and other data recipients by December 2020.
BookNet Canada is dedicated to supporting supply chain participants as they prepare to supply ONIX 3.0. Because of that, our Bibliographic Committee has confirmed a deadline of August 28, 2020 as the date by which Canadian data providers should be able to generate ONIX 3.0. The first step was to launch a countdown calendar for the industry, and make available a list of essential resources for data providers to consider as they prepare to make the transition.
