Exploring Canadian Romance and Erotica titles

Happy Valentine’s Day! In this season of love, we wanted to take a look at Canadian Romance and Erotica titles over the last five years. We used Canadian contributor data to determine whether the author, illustrator, translator, or editor (in the case of an edited collection of material) was Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada and we used BookNet Canada’s SalesData, the national sales tracking service for the Canadian English-language trade book market, and LibraryData, the national library collection and circulation analysis tool, to track the print book sales and library circulation in Canada.

From 2020 to 2024, sales of Canadian Romance titles were up 404%. If we take a closer look, we can see sales were down 45% from 2020 to 2021 but then increased steadily from 2021 to 2024, up 814%.

Overall, loans of Canadian Romance titles increased 640% in the last five years. From 2020 to 2024, loans increased gradually, the largest increase was from 2022 to 2023, up 84%.

Overall, sales of Canadian Erotica titles were up 176% from 2020 to 2024. Interestingly, from 2020 to 2023, sales decreased 59% but they had a sharp increase from 2023 to 2024, up 567%.
