If the pandemic didn’t have you attempting to make a new recipe, read more books, or take up a new hobby, chances are you gave jigsaw puzzles or sudoku a try, or maybe even jumped on the Wordle bandwagon.
Two years into the pandemic, are people over puzzles?
We put together the pieces with data from our recent study of Canadian independent booksellers and SalesData, our national sales tracking service for the Canadian English-language trade print book market.
Buying puzzles at the bookstore
Bookstores rarely only sell books. And according to our study, The State of Independent Bookselling in Canada 2020, 87% of Canadian independent bookstores sell puzzles.
For these independent bookstores, puzzle sales account for 2-3% of their total revenue in 2020, depending on their bookstore’s size. And this number might actually be higher. For this study, we had separate categories for independent bookstores to share their puzzle sales, compared to sales for other toys and games. It’s likely that some sales numbers for puzzles remained in the toys and games category. Depending on their bookstore’s size, toys and games accounted for anywhere from 3-9% of total revenue in 2020.
Are these more or less puzzles than average?
Definitely more. We found that sales of puzzles increased for 80% of independent bookstores from 2019 to 2020. By comparison, toys and games sales increased for 45% of bookstores, while also decreasing for 28% of them.

Tracking puzzle sales in the book market
Did puzzles stay popular in the book market in 2021?
There are three puzzle-related BISAC categories that we can use to track the sales of puzzles in the Canadian book market:

Not quite.

And for jigsaw puzzles specifically — even though jigsaw puzzles published in 2020 account for the majority of the bestsellers in both 2020 and 2021, the sales of jigsaw puzzles seems to be trending up for Canadians, with the sales of 2021’s most popular jigsaw puzzles outpacing 2020’s.
Maybe puzzles really are the perfect pandemic pastime!
